About Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is a public service infrastructure company established on 1 January 1992 by Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The company is owned by the state and aims to provide a suitable and reliable service to the people of Dubai.
As of end-2019, DEWA has a workforce of 11,727 employees and provides electricity to 915,623 customers and water to 816,580 customers. In 2019, DEWA had a capacity of 11,400 MW of electricity and 470 million imperial gallons of desalinated water daily.
DEWA has shifted from using conventional gas-fired power plants to building the 5GW Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is known for setting several cost records for solar power from photovoltaics and concentrated solar power. After installing an initial 13 MW (DC) solar plant as the first phase in 2013, DEWA contracted another 200 MW (AC) second phase from developer ACWA Power in January 2015. The third phase is an 800 MW PV power plant, which began in the fall of 2015 and is expected to be completed by 2020. DEWA has also planned a 250 MW pumped storage hydroelectricity project at Hatta using 880 million gallons of water above 300 meters.
